Healthy Ways to Celebrate Valentine's Day

It was just a few weeks ago that we were making resolutions to eat healthy, exercise more and eat less sugar. As we approach Valentine’s Day, it is easy to get in to the bad habit of devouring conversation hearts and snacking on your favorite chocolates. In order for you and your loved ones to stay on track, plan ahead to find creative, healthy ways to celebrate the holiday. Here are a few ideas to get you started:

Significant other:

Plan a day trip. Consider visiting a museum, flea market or a restaurant that has been on your bucket list.

Go outdoors. Take a hike or try ice skating. Northeast Ohio is bursting with beautiful walking trails and ice skating rinks. After you finish your adventure, cozy up with a warm cup of cocoa.

Cook together. Sit down, plan your menu and head to the local grocery store together. Spending time in the kitchen can be a great start to a fun evening.

Make a coupon book. Your significant other will appreciate redeeming coupons for a free massage, breakfast in bed or a surprise date night.

Have a picnic. For those chilly nights, spread a tablecloth on the living room floor. Be sure to include candles, soft music and conclude with a cheese tray for a healthy dessert.

Include the kids:

Watch a movie. Visit a local theater or pull out one of your old favorites that the entire family will enjoy. Camp out on the living room floor for plenty of snuggle time!

Prepare a meal. Get creative by planning a meal together. Add a splash of color to the table with various decorations. While you are busy cooking, the kids can stay involved by making heart-shaped placemats out of construction paper. After dinner, take time for each family member to share what they love about each other.

Go outdoors. Look for local events in your area such as ice skating or sledding. If it’s too cold outside, consider taking the fun indoors at a local roller skating rink, bowling alley or arcade.

Take a day trip. Nothing says fun like a surprise trip to an indoor waterpark!

Have a craft night. Visit your local craft store and purchase a variety of items including construction paper, fun stickers and glue. The possibilities are endless!

Going solo:

Go outdoors. Visit a local trail and get moving! What better way to love yourself than by exercising?

Get crafty. When it’s cold outside, you can find venues offering classes in pottery, painting or furniture refurbishing.

Pamper yourself. After a long winter, consider getting a pedicure, massage or a great new hair style.

Volunteer. Consider volunteering for a local charity or organization. It’s a great mood booster!

If you have made a few healthy lifestyle changes this year, you can still enjoy Valentine’s Day without going all natural or “organic.” Just remember to be more aware of what you are putting in your body. If you find yourself in the chocolate aisle and you give in to the craving, put the chocolate in the freezer and enjoy it in moderation over the next few weeks. After all, love doesn’t just happen on Valentine’s Day–it  should be practiced every day of the year.
