Returning to Breast Cancer Screening After the Pandemic

The National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) recommends that women at average risk for breast cancer undergo annual mammography screening starting at the age of 40. Because some women may have additional risk factors for breast cancer that would require screening before age 40, we recommend that you discuss your individual cancer screening needs with your personal physician.

Breast cancer death rates have declined by 40% over the last 30 years largely due to routine mammography screening, early detection and improved treatment options. Steady progress has been made in improving cancer screening rates since this time. However, the COVID-19 pandemic could potentially reverse these gains. A survey conducted by the American Cancer Society estimates that 35% of Americans have missed a routine cancer screening due to COVID-19-related fears and service disruptions.

Routine screening and early detection are still the best medicine. Last year created many disruptions, but Aultman has resumed all services in their full capacity with extra safety precautions in place to keep you safe. We continue to lead our community to improved health, and we hope you take some time today to look after your own health by obtaining an order from your physician and scheduling your screening mammogram. We look forward to welcoming you back.

When you are ready to schedule, call centralized scheduling at (330) 363-6288. If you have already scheduled your mammogram, thank you for prioritizing your health and well-being.
