Get Organized 2018
01/06/2023

How Organized Are You?

Living in an organized environment, whether at work or home, promotes order and brings a sense of calm to our busy lives. As we begin another year and recognize National Get Organized Month, here are a few tips to get you on the right track to finding a little peace in your hectic world.

Set up a command center

Identify the space in your home where all your mail, keys and school papers tend to land, and designate it as a “command center.” Make a habit of opening your mail as soon as you get it out of your mailbox, and discard the junk before you even come inside. Once inside, file your bills at your command center according to the dates they are due. Keep your checkbook and stamps handy so these can be paid easily and on time.

To make it even simpler, consider going green and choose paperless billing methods. Opting to pay your bills online will not only reduce clutter, but it can also help with monthly notifications so you don’t miss payments.

Keep a master calendar

Purchase a monthly calendar, and begin by filling in the commitments you’ve already made. This could include things like birthdays, school activities or sports schedules. Hang it in a prominent place (preferably at your command center) so all family members can easily refer to it. If you have a larger family, you may find it helpful to color code your calendar according to the activity or family member. Most importantly, keep it current.

Check your finances

It’s a new year, so now is a great time to take a step back and review your spending habits. Think about your goals and financial resolutions for this year. Do you have enough money set aside in your budget, or better yet, do you even have a budget? Consider finding an online budgeting tool or mobile app to help get your finances under control.

Reach out for help

Your finances may allow you to hire an organizing professional, but if not, there is no shame in asking a friend for help. Having an organized friend on your side will help you stay accountable and focused while you get your life in order.

Once you find an organizing system that works for you, keep it going. Using clearly defined processes will save you time and money, and in the long run, it will free you up to do the things you love.
