Enjoy Fireworks Safely This Summer
Nothing beats the joy and nostalgia of a spectacular fireworks display lighting up the summer sky. While you may be tempted to liven up your summer celebrations by setting off these colorful displays at home, it is best to leave the fireworks to the experts.
According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), more than 10,000 people were treated in emergency rooms for fireworks injuries in 2022, and 11 people died. Nearly 75% of these injuries occurred in the weeks before and after Independence Day. Burns were the most common injury caused by fireworks. Fireworks can also spark wildfires.
The National Safety Council (NSC) advises against personal use of fireworks. To make the most of summer holiday celebrations, pack a picnic, grab a blanket and snag a viewing spot at a professionally produced fireworks display.
Safety Tips
If you do plan to set off fireworks at home, first make sure that the fireworks are legal. The state of Ohio, for example, allows limited use of certain fireworks on specific days of the year, with restrictions. Check both state and local laws, since local laws often take precedence over state law.
Always follow safety precautions when using fireworks. The CPSC, NSC and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) offer the following guidance for fireworks safety:
- Do not use fireworks when under the influence of drugs, alcohol or other substances that might impair your judgment.
- Keep children at a distance from fireworks, and do not allow them to use fireworks.
- Don’t aim fireworks at people, animals or objects.
- Light fireworks one at a time, then move away from them quickly.
- Never hold lighted fireworks in your hands.
- Never light fireworks indoors.
- Use protective eyewear for anyone handling fireworks or standing near them.
- Do not try to pick up or relight misfired fireworks.
- Keep water nearby to use in case of fire and to soak used fireworks before discarding them.
Sparklers are not safe, particularly for children. Sparklers burn at about 2,000 degrees, and they can quickly ignite clothing. In fact, about 25% of emergency room visits for fireworks annually are due to sparklers. Glow sticks, party poppers or color streamers are just as fun and are much safer.
