Cold-Weather Safety
This winter, take proper precautions to stay safe inside your home and out.
You never know when the weather will cause power outages, so always be prepared. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) offers these tips.
Stock food that needs no cooking or refrigeration. Keep a supply of water in clean containers.
Keep your mobile phone fully charged.
Keep an up-to-date emergency kit in your home that includes a battery-operated flashlight, a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Weather Radio, lamp, extra batteries, a first aid kit and any necessary baby items.
Check the batteries in your carbon monoxide and smoke detectors. To protect your family from carbon monoxide (CO):
-
Keep grills, camp stoves and generators out of the house, basement and garage.
-
Place generators at least 20 feet from the house.
-
Leave your home immediately if the CO detector sounds, and call 911.
Be Prepared for Outdoor Activities
When heading outdoors in the winter:
-
Sprinkle cat litter or sand on icy patches around your home.
-
Bring pets indoors or provide appropriate shelter and water for them.
-
Check the weather forecast before traveling.
-
Always carry a fully charged mobile phone.
-
Wear appropriate outdoor clothing, typically light and warm layers. Wear waterproof boots, mittens or gloves, a hat and scarf.
-
Always go with someone when you are participating in outdoor activities, and take an emergency kit.
-
Become familiar with the signs of frostbite and hypothermia. Seek emergency help if numbness or pain persists.
-
Make sure you do not overexert yourself on outdoor chores, particularly shoveling. Take breaks when needed.
For more details on winter weather preparedness, visit the CDC’s Winter Weather page.
